Valborg

May 1 is Valborg day in Scandinavia & our whole neighborhood will gather around on a field early tonight and make a huge bonfire, drink snaps & sing songs to celebrate the coming of spring and summer. The night from April 30 to May 1 is called "Walpurgisnight", the night of Walpurgis or Walpurga or otherwise known locally as Valborgnight. This celebration started a long time ago. Legend has it that before winter departs, the witches and their cohorts have one last fling, so to ward them off, one of the numerous rituals includes having a bonfire to scare them & all evil away. It's a pretty fun gathering since we get to meet our neighbors who we seldom see and everybody is in a good spirit all ready & eager to welcome summer!
